Concept and programme for ‘Lanna’, my third solo: An international online exhibition
As in every journey, one meets a lot of people. In this particular one, I am honoured and thankful that they helped make my trip a memorable one: Top line: Wattana Wattanapun, Inson Wongsam, Surasit Saokong and Sriwanna Saokong. Second line: Pongdej Chaiyakut, Jaffee Yee, Akha tailors Archa and wife Pim. Third line: Owners and managers of saa paper factory, Kenneth Ang and Lou (Sampan Tewata). Fourth line:Violinist artist who played, among others, Burung Kakak Tua, Yew Ming and husband, Peerapong Doung Kaew

THIS “LANNA” show is another completely different experience for me. It was created in close consultation with my curator Stephen Menon who has a wealth of experience in putting together exhibitions — in Malaysia and abroad. On my part, in addition to my art, I threw in my experience as a media man — in medium creation and distribution. “Lanna” will be on from May 6 till June 5.

Our main purposes for the show are to:

  1. Define photography in a different way; Stephen suggested that I extend the colours I paint with into the medium, which I thought is a very a good idea;
  2. Draw on the vast symbolisms in Lanna (Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and its surrounds) and project them in images and narratives;
  3. Go international and online. Stephen and I have always talked about taking Malaysian art further ashore, and I am privileged to have O Art Space in Lahore, Pakistan, as my host. Stephen knows them well; it is a dynamic hub for contemporary art, renowned for its avant-garde approach and commitment to fostering cultural dialogue; and
  4. Finally, define a way, a method, to make a “cookie cutter” for artists, especially emerging ones, to take their solos offshore in an affordable and comprehensive manner.

As for the audience, I am thankful we are reaching the vast database of O Art Space. We are also reaching the friends of Art Voice, Stephen’s art community, and, of course, my own. They are located all the over the world. I hope they will share my work. I wish to convey my gratitude in advance.

The media we are using is multi-pronged — befitting the traditional and digital worlds we traverse:

  • Catalogue (a PDF catalogue, which is ready, will be shared on our Official Opening Day on May 15, 2025)
  • Substack (the exhibition comprises 20 parts and one will sent out every week day; click here to go to my Substack page)
  • Facebook (one part per day, click here to go my page)
  • Instagram (ditto, click here)
  • LinkedIn (ditto, chick here)
  • X (ditto, click here)
  • More media, like videos, will also be aired

Tomorrow, May 6, 2025, our Launch Day, I will be publishing a number of parts via Substack: (1) Introduction (2) Foreword (3) Acknowledgments (4) Background on my “Journeys to Lanna” (5) the first part, and (6) “The show so far”. My apologies in advance for the coming deluge.

Readers of this site will get an overall story which will be updated with new links every week day.

I hope you will enjoy the experience.
